Application Process

No application will be considered until it is complete. The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure that all documents (i.e. transcripts, test results) are submitted or post-marked by the program's deadline for application.

We no longer accept paper applications. You now must apply online. This new online application will open on October 15th and will remain open until the deadline. The online application allows you to:

  • Enter personal and biographical information
  • Statement of Academic Intent (allows 4,000 characters including spaces)
  • Academic background
  • Professional background (if applicable)
  • Proficiency in English Scores (if applicable) (applicant must have testing service send score electronically to Western)
  • Order electronic transcripts from a university in Ontario directly online (all others you must order separately and sent directly to the address below)
  • Request references letters electronically. This sends forms directly to referees who completes the form online. This request is sent 5-7 days AFTER you submit your application online. Please make sure to speak with your referees well before the deadline so they are prepared to submit when they receive the email request from us.
    • Masters applicants require two (2) reference letters
    • PhD applicants require three (3) reference letters
  • Payment of application fee in various methods:
    • Credit Card
    • Internet or Telephone Bill Payment Services
    • Cheque or Money Order

Application Requirements

After you submit your online application, you will need to follow up by submitting your supporting documents. Your application requirements include the following:

  1. SAMPLE OF WORK: A sample of your previous written work (15-20 pages) sent electronically to anthro-grad-office@uwo.ca 
  2. TRANSCRIPTS: One official* copy of university transcripts from each university you attended that were NOT ordered through the application online. Past or current students of the University of Western Ontario do not need to provide transcripts for their academic history at Western. This information will be obtained internally.
  3. ENGLISH TESTING: Official English Testing scores (if applicable) sent directly from institution
  4. QUESTIONAIRE:  Please complete the following questionnaire. Right click the questionnaire link and save a local copy of the PDF form. Once complete, save the form again, and email the completed form to anthro-grad-office@uwo.ca.  Link to: Anthropology Questionnaire  [Right click to save local copy.]
  5. CURRICULUM VITAE (Optional): Please send us a copy of your CV/Resume electronically via email.

*Western considers a transcript official only if it is received in a university envelope that is sealed and signed on the flap by the official person in the office issuing the transcript. If the transcript and degree certificate are not in English, a certified translation must also be included. (Non-English transcripts from institutions within Canada do not require a translation.)

Deadline

All applications and all supporting documentation must be postmarked not later than February 1st* or the first working day after, if this date falls on a weekend. Applicants are urged to submit their applications well in advance of this deadline.

*Note: If you submit your online application ON the deadline, your referees will be notified via email to submit their reference letters within two weeks which will be beyond the deadline but still acceptable.
