William Michael Carter, PhD, is an applied systems anthropologist, archaeologist, and digital cultural heritage researcher whose work focuses on virtual archaeology, digital heritage, and applying emerging technologies to archaeological interpretation. He holds a PhD in Anthropology and Archaeology from Western University and has worked extensively at the intersection of archaeology, digital media, visualization, and immersive technologies. His current research focuses on the archaeology of Vimy Ridge, particularly the extensive subterranean battlefield landscape created during the First World War. His research combines archaeological investigation, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, spatial documentation, and digital reconstruction to document tunnels, caves, dugouts, inscriptions, and other material traces of the Canadian experience at Vimy. He is developing new approaches to digitally preserve and interpret fragile and inaccessible battlefield environments while examining the relationships among material heritage, memory, technology, and Canadian identity.
