www.pavelab.caI am a biological anthropologist whose work focuses on human adaptability, and in particular how long term cultural and technological change influences human biology. I am the principal investigator of the PAVE Lab (Phenotypic Adaptability, Variation, and Evolution Lab) at Western University. Research within PAVE Lab spans the past 4 million years so it includes the disciplines of paleoanthropology, bioarchaeology, and human biology. Our work includes: research on the origins and adaptability of our genus; the dispersals and patterns of adaptation in our species; biocultural adaptations among late Holocene and Pleistocene foragers; biological change in human populations associated with the transition to agriculture; and the mechanisms that influence phenotypic variation today. The overarching themes that unite this research are the relationships between technology, cultural change, environmental variation, and the physiology and morphology of the human body.
I am an active member of the Bone and Joint Institute where, in collaboration with Dr. Tina Ziebart from the School of Physical Therapy, I co-lead a Grand Challenges Team researching Bone health throughout the lifespan.

I am looking for masters or PhD students that are broadly interested in bioarchaeology and habitual behaviour, palaeoanthropology, functional morphology, skeletal biomechanics, human variability, energetics and life history. I supervise graduate students on a range of topics relating to skeletal biology, human evolution, and human adaptability. I also supervise research projects that use living humans to understand adaptation, physiology, energetics, or the influences of habitual activity on the human skeleton. Thus far I have supervised 26 PhD and 43 Masters students. A partial list of my former PhD students can be found at the Academic Phylogeny of Biological Anthropology: https://www.bioanthtree.org/detail/Jay_Stock/.
More information about my current graduate students and their research projects can be found on our lab website: www.pavelab.ca
