Our History

Founded over a half-century ago, the Department of Anthropology at Western University has continuously evolved to meet the shifting landscapes of academic research and educational needs. The discipline was first established at Western in 1970 as an undergraduate program within the Department of Geography. The Department of Anthropology was formally established in 1972. Since then we have grown to be a four sub-field program (Sociocultural, Linguistic, and Biological Anthropology and Archaeology), and we are known for our outstanding faculty, excellent research opportunities and resources, collaborative interdisciplinary partnerships, and robust graduate training.
